The first three seconds decide everything.
Nobody decides to skip your video. They just never decide to stay.

Retention graphs all look the same: a cliff at the start, then a slope. The cliff is the first three seconds, and it is where most channels lose half of everyone they will ever reach. Not because the video was bad. Because the opening never gave anyone a reason to find out.
A hook is not a sentence. It is the first frame, the first cut, the first word, and the first movement, all arriving at once. The eye decides before the ear does: if the opening frame looks like every other video, the thumb has already moved. This is why we treat the first three seconds as their own edit, with their own review.
The mechanics are learnable. Open inside the moment, never before it. Cut the greeting; nobody stays for "hey guys, welcome back." Put the most interesting frame of the whole video first, even if it happens at the end of the story. Let the first caption create a question the next ten seconds must answer.
Then stop selling. The biggest hook mistake after weak openings is loud ones: promises the video cannot keep. The audience forgives a quiet start faster than a broken promise, and the platform measures the difference as watch time.
Every reel we ship gets this treatment, because the math is unforgiving: double the three-second hold and you roughly double everything downstream. Same footage, same idea, same you. The difference is the edit.
